Over the last few weeks, I’ve covered the biggest fashion trends of the season and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe for work and play.  However!  I ask you, what’s a great outfit without killer accessories?  Whether you’re looking for a full closet refresh or just a few on-trend touches to update your fall wardrobe, accessories are a great (budget-friendly!) place to start.  Today we’re taking a closer look at the best and brightest embellishments of the season by rounding up the top 9 accessory trends you need to know this fall.

1 //  Sock Boots

Mary Orton wears a Margiela emerald green cable knit turtleneck sweater, a Theory emerald green ruched satin midi skirt, black Stuart Weitzman sock booties and a multi jewel toned Tory Burch bag.

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

If there’s one item you plan to buy this fall, the sock boot should be your NUMERO UNO.  No matter what you’re wearing—a slinky skirt or boyfriend jeans—this killer boot will up your style game and keep your ankles cozy to boot (pun intended?).  Your days of pondering life’s mysteries such as “$#&% it’s cold, why is there an awkward gap between my boot and ankle?” are officially over.  You’ll see sock boots shine in every color, material, and style, from velvet and metallic for soirée-worthy events to athletic-inspired stripes for chic street style.  I can’t get enough of these black booties from Stuart Weitzman which I also recently wore here in red, but if you’re looking for an affordable alternative, check out this similar pair that’s under $150!

2//  Sculptural Earrings

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a cut out marigold ALC turtleneck sweater and Amber Sceats sculptural earrings

Statement earrings first jumped on the scene a few seasons ago and the trend has been gaining momentum ever since.  This season, trade in your tassels and pompoms for geometric, artful shapes, especially in strong metals.  Linear, circular, and other structural-shaped baubles will be the front-runners in the ear candy game.  I’m swooning over these Amber Sceats shield-inspired earrings, but also check out these beauties (spoiler alert: they’re under $40!).

3 // Structured Bags

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Petar Petrov double breasted blazer, Petar Petrov tapered trousers, a black Mark Cross box bag and black cat eye sunglasses

It makes perfect sense that with the emergence of sculptural jewelry and clothing silhouettes (like power suiting!) we would see strong shapes in bags as well.  Structured bags are killing it this season, and this is one of my favorite trends, mostly because it’s the type of bag I gravitate towards no matter how the trend winds blow.  Most recently, you’ve seen bags like this black Mark Cross box bag, this multi jewel toned Tory Burch bag, and this mini M2Malletier beauty, but top of my wishlist is this sleek Theory beauty (under $400!) that comes in black and red.  Structured bag + sculptural earrings?  Who even needs cool clothes?

4 //  Retro Sunnies

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton wears Gucci wide leg side striped trousers, a classic white button down, white Elizabeth and James retro sunglasses and a red leather shoulder bag

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Retro sunglasses are YUUUGE this season, and luckily for us, this is the EASIEST accessory trend to rock.  There’s a style for every face shape, and Nordstrom’s killer BP. line (where basically every pair is $12) makes it crazy affordable to try any (or as many) styles that you like!  I’m also obsessed with these white Elizabeth and James sunnies, but if you’re looking for more classic retro shades, check out these $12 cat eye stunners!

5 //  Bold Red Lip

Mary Orton wears an off shoulder embroidered floral Sachin and Babi gown to a black tie wedding in France

You already know that statement red is officially THE color of fall, but if you’re not ready to rock a bright red power suit, rest-assured, this trend can easily be incorporated into your arsenal with a classic red lip.  Cue your inner T.Swift, ’cause there’s a perfect hue for every skin tone!

6 // Leopard Print

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a corduroy blazer, checked mini skirt, leopard print Sam Edelman ankle strap pumps and black cat eye sunglasses

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Leopard print fully attacked the fashion scene this season and while you certainly can’t go wrong with anything (and everything!) leopard, the easiest way to sport this trend is in the accessories.  If you’ve ever owned a leopard shoe or leopard bag, you know that the trend is somehow a counter-intuitive power neutral—pairing as easily with blacks and tans as does with fuchsia or plaid.  You’ll be seeing this fierce trend absolutely everywhere (if you aren’t already), from leopard print jackets (which I’m totally digging BTW), to sunnies, scarves and (insanely adorable) shoes.

7 //  Hats

One awesome PSA for the season: bad hair days no longer exist.  Chapeaus of all sorts are absolutely everywhere this fall, so have fun with the whimsy of berets, baker boys, fedoras… you name it.

8 //  Sparkling Accessories

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a black leather Valentino studded shoulder bag, silver metallic one shoulder Rebecca Minkoff blouse and Rachel Zoe metallic fringed midi skirt

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Glitz and glam are having a moment indeed, and your extremities are not left out of this party.  ‘Tis the season to put a sparkle in your step… or on your arm… or wherever the heck you want.  From studded leather handbags to a full-on footwear shine fest, metallic, glitter and sparkling accessories of all sorts make for an elevated, updated look day or night.

9 //  Chain chain chain

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Sara Battaglia cropped check blazer, high waisted black pencil skirt, white satin camisole and a chain belt with pearl embellishments

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

80s-inspired chain accessories have officially jumped out of a pop culture music videos and re-entered your daily wardrobe.  I’m obsessing over chain belts (i.e. jewelry for your pants), but also keep an eye out for bold, layered chain link necklaces.
