TURTLENECK STRIPED SWEATER: Maggie Marilyn (affordable alternative HERE!) |  STIRRUP SKI PANTS: 3.1 Phillip Lim (almost identical version under $50 HERE!)  |  SLIDE PUMP: Louise et Cie  |  LEATHER SHOULDER BAG: Nico Giani  |  CAT EYE SUNGLASSES: BP. (sold out, similar HERE and HERE)  |  DISC EARRINGS: Madewell (sold out in silver, similar HERE)

Moving right along to Day 7 of our Fall/Winter Trend Memo, today’s spotlight is on cozy knits, stirrup pants and all things aprés ski.  No doubt designers drew heavy inspiration from the slopes this season (as evidenced by Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Loewe, and Sonia Rykiel), but you certainly don’t have to be on holiday in Aspen to jump in the game.  Aprés ski style has officially exited the lodge and headed to the streets, so read on for tips on taking this trend from desk to drinks, and don’t forget to check out my favorite picks at the bottom of this post!

If you haven’t gotten the memo, consider this fair warning: stirrup pants are back and bigger than ever and I am all in on the trend.  Honestly, if I could get any fonder of these Phillip Lim stirrup pants it would be detrimental to my health (pleats, pinstripes, AND stirrups?!  Just stop it.).  Of course, the stirrup pant is inspired by sportswear originally developed for skiing (and horseback riding) and has now been resurrected from the 80s versions (which were resurrected from the 60s, which were resurrected from the 20s…), but whether you’re hitting the slopes, sipping hot toddies by the fire, or just getting ready for Tuesday morning at the office, it’s safe to say that stirrups are a solid investment this season.  Be sure to strap ’em outside of your heels to give these stunners the attention they deserve.

FYI, I found these stirrups which are super similar to the ones I’m wearing today for under $50!

Ski-inspired knits crafted in bold colors and patterns will also be big hitters this season, but also keep an eye out for more refined and updated aprés ski styles that may whisper, not shout.  As seen in today’s look, aprés ski style is a perfect complement to another craze of the season, luxe leisure (see Day 2 of this series if you missed it!).  The varsity-inspired turtleneck (shout out to Day 3, Statement Red!) I’m wearing today is equal parts comfy, cool and of-the-moment.  The placement of the white stripes is killer, but the asymmetrical ruffle?  I’m dead.

And since we’re rolling with the statement red trend, how about this Nico Giani bag?! I’m also a big fan of this red bag under $100.

My denial aside, cooling temps are indicating that winter IS in fact coming [insert Jon Snow joke here] and judging by the fact that ski-inspired knits, stirrup pants, and coats made all sorts of cameos on the FW17 runways, I’m wondering if this one’s going to be a bit colder than usual…

Day 8 of the Fall/Winter Trend Memo Series is dedicated to (arguably) my all-time favorite color spectrum—jewel tones.  I’m not just on board with this Fall trend, I’m driving this damn train.  What’s not to love about hues that conjure the likes of emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and gold (a.k.a. subliminal gift messaging to your significant other), amiright?  This season’s majestic shades have popped up everywhere, in every way so today I’m breaking down these semi-precious tones from outerwear to accessories and everything in between.

There’s no wrong way to rock the jewel tone trend, but as evidenced today, I decided to bathe in one of the biggest jewel tones of the season—emerald green.  To up the ante when working with a monochromatic look, mix textures like satin, fur and chunky knits to add interest. This satin Theory skirt feels just as dreamy as it looks… and check out the ruching, which hides the curly fries you ordered at lunch and makes for an uber-flattering silhouette.  Piggybacking off of yesterday’s trend (holla back Aprés Ski), this MM6 cable-knit turtleneck (great affordable dupe here!) is a favorite that I already know I’ll be sporting all winter long.  Glam it up like I’ve done today or dress it down á la aprés-ski style with a pair of stirrup pants or a favorite pair of jeans.

This delicious green faux fur coat from Anthropologie definitely amps up the look even more, and is another piece that looks just as fab dressed down.  We know fur has been trending for, well basically ever, but as it continues its ascent this season, be on the lookout for colorful fluff.  From full-length faux fur coats to fur-trimmed anything, rich, vibrant shades reign supreme.

If you aren’t ready to “rock” head-to-toe jewel tones, you can subtly royal out with accessories like these shoes (which I have in back and white!) or this beautiful bag.   I’m OBSESSING over these fur-trimmed loafers which would elevate an otherwise-classic look with ease.

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton emerald cable knit Margiela sweater Theory ruched satin midi skirt Stuart Weitzman boots multi Jewel Toned Tory Burch handbag

Crowning today’s jewel tone fest is the dreamiest Tory Burch bag I’ve seen in a long time.  I audibly gasped when I spotted it.  You can plan on seeing this beauty make a lot of appearances around here…

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton emerald cable knit Margiela sweater Theory ruched satin midi skirt Stuart Weitzman boots multi Jewel Toned Tory Burch handbag

And last but certainly not least, I give you these magnificent Stuart Weitzman sock boots (love the other color options too!).  Of course, no one makes a quality boot quite like Stuart Weitzman, but if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, check out these beauties.  However you swing it, just make sure some version makes its way into your closet because the sock boot is unquestionably the biggest fall shoe trend this season.

WEAR TO WORK

  • It is impossible to overstate the love I have for THIS DRESS and the level of stress that is consuming me in deciding which color to buy.  Please send help.
  • This ruby red suiting would be killer at the office.
  • Marigold yellow is one of the hottest colors of the season and this Tibi sweater would be perfect in or out of the office.  I’m a straight-up heart eyes emoji over that coordinating set.
  • This beautiful matte satin long-sleeve wrap dress would be perfect for any workplace (I’m forever a sucker for that red!).
  • This stunning blouse would be amazing over a tapered ankle-length trouser for the office, and easily dressed up for a night out as well.  Love the wrist detail!
  • Last but not least, check out this elegant ponte knit skirt!

BRB, OUT OF OFFICE

  • I purchased a red leather moto jacket last season and it ended up being one of the most heavily-worn items in my closet.  I absolutely love this one.  How perfect is that ruffle detailing?!
  • If this super fun pleated skirt doesn’t make you happy, then I don’t know what will.  It comes in three beautiful shades and I’m trying to rationalize buying them all…
  • How perfect is this drop shoulder jacket?! It’s also under $200…
  • I’m weirdly into this sequined tie midi skirt.  Is anybody with me?!
  • If you’ve been waiting all summer for sweater season, check out this cozy knit (that’s under $100!) and this plum wrap number (that’s under $50!).
  • These adorable faux-fur heels can amp up even the most basic look.  Also check out these bad boys!
  • For a formal affair, check out this beautiful gown. Throw on a fur stole and you’ve got yourself the perfect ensemble for a fall or winter wedding!

Taking the number 9 spot in our Trend Memo Series is the trend that’s probably already blowing up your Instagram feed—VELVET.  Back with a vengeance from last year’s quick entrance on the scene, the velvets of this season are more elevated than ever before.  We’re talking velvet suits, dresses, full-length dusters, block-heel pumps and even velvet hair ties (which I’m totally digging, BTW).

Before we dive in, one game-changing PSA: Today’s cut-out sweater and these perfect A.L.C. gold velvet trousers are from Neiman Marcus’s killer CUSP lineChic week at Neiman is happening RIGHT NOW, so all CUSP items are 25% off through October 8th with code CHICWEEK.  If you haven’t checked out the CUSP collection before, let me be the first to tell you that it is to die for, so hop to!

This cut-out turtleneck by A.L.C. is easily one of my favorite purchases of the season, and while I love me a chic monochromatic look, just wait ’til you try this sucker on with blue jeans.  With a bold cherry red lip, the color combo is dynamite.  Marigold yellows are an ENORMOUS color trend this season—part of the emphasis on all things jewel-toned—and when it comes to the color of the season, they are definitely in the running for the number one spot… err… the gold, if you will.

You’d be hard-pressed not to notice that the top trends this season inter-mix like conjoined twins.  Today’s opulent Veronica Beard velvet tuxedo pants are a beautiful melange of today’s featured velvet trend with two other standouts of this series: yesterday’s jewel tones and the luxe leisure trend from Day 2.  With sporty rock-out vibes and pajama feels, these luscious beauties are as comfortable as they are beautiful.  Everybody and their sister must agree, because unfortunately the marigold is sold out EVERYWHERE (you can still snag them in black), but these gold A.L.C. trousers are the perfect dupe.

Continuing on the jewel tones vibe, cue this to. die. for. Tory Burch chain-link bag (also here in a beautiful black and blue combo).  I warned you yesterday that you’d be seeing a lot of this sucker, and I wasn’t kidding.  Also on the accessory front, sculptural earrings are trending big time, and it doesn’t get any better than these stunning Amber Sceats beauties.  I’m also eyeing up these babies which are on sale!

As mentioned, it’s a great time to round out your fall wardrobe and score some trendy fall pieces on major sale during Neiman Marcus’s crazy Cusp sale that ends on Sunday!  I’ve got this velvet stunner in my shopping cart right now.  If there’s a more beautiful blazer on the market, I dare you to find it.  When shopping the Cusp sale, don’t forget to use code CHICWEEK for the 25% off!!

WEAR TO WORK

  • This elegant sheath dress is the perfect way to incorporate velvet into your work wardrobe.  It would look perfect with a classic black blazer on top, or even better, layer a classic white long-sleeve button down underneath and leather waist belt.
  • I’m in LOVE with these wide-leg trousers. The classic cut and expert tailoring make these pants a great investment piece that you’ll wear over and over again.  If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, check out these under $100 straight-leg pants!
  • If you’re looking to add a subtle touch of velvet, don’t miss this gorgeous barrette!
  • If you’re as down with jewel tones as I am, don’t miss this tailored velvet blazer
  • If you’re into velvet footwear, check out these stunning bow slides in navy and black…
  • This long-sleeve turtleneck is perfect for pairing with a classic blazer and trousers for a killer wear-everyday ensemble.
  • This gorg satin-trimmed midi skirt can take you from the office to a special night out in no time flat.

Sliding into home plate, the grand finale of the Fall/Winter Trend Memo is a shining moment indeed—the resurgence of sparkle and all things metallic this season.  Across the board designers such as Chanel, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Loewe were looking to the future on their FW17 runways with sparkling other-wordly detailing, shapes and styling.  Go ahead and cue your inner shooting star, ’cause today we’re talking about how to add a little (or a lot of) firepower to your wardrobe.

Sparkles, sequins and metallics are in it to win it this season, but also look for other jazzy elements like fringe and feathers.  Though tradition tells us to save the glitz for formal occasions, designers and street style stars alike are showing us that this season’s sparkle isn’t just for nighttime—think metallic sneakers, sparkly tops paired with jeans, or even metallic outerwear.

If this Rachel Zoe metallic fringe midi doesn’t wet your whistle for the shine + fringe rage, check your pulse, stat.  Can’t contain my burning desire to t-w-i-r-l, so not even gonna try.  The silver lining (omg, punz!) of this baby is that you can dress it up for full-on glam or throw on a graphic tee and booties for super chic daytime street style.  Carrie Bradshaw would totes do it, and so should you.

Quick PSA:  The dress version of this metallic fringe skirt is currently 25% off as well as the matching jacket during the Neiman Marcus sale which ends Sunday!!

This Rebecca Minkoff metallic blouse (which I also snagged for a casual 25% off from Neiman’s killer CUSP sale going on right now!) is also a showstopper in its own right. First off, this crushed metallic fabric would make a potato sack look runway-worthy, but tailored into this one-shoulder beauty with a peek-a-boo tie sleeve?  Rebecca, you’re a damn wizard.

Chic week at Neiman ends this Sunday, October 8th, so act fast to snatch today’s blouse and/or any other fall staples at 25% off.  Don’t forget to use code CHICWEEK for the discount!

If rocking the newest metallic/sparkle trend from head-to-toe isn’t your gig (or you just don’t think your office is the place for an alien-inspired encounter), you can tiptoe into the sparkle game with just a hint of shine.  A subtle metallic turtleneck under a classic black suit will give you a perfectly polite amount of glimmer without having to dim the lights in the cubicle next door.  Outside of the office, try on these mirror-heeled boots, or throw on a sparkling belt, earrings, or shoes to add a touch of sparkle without going full throttle.

WEAR TO WORK

Disclaimer:  If you work in a particularly formal environment (lawyers, bankers, accountants, I’m looking at you!) I’d recommend focusing this trend on your out-of-office wardrobe.  If you work in a creative or casual environment, check out some of these ideas!

  • Incorporating a bit of sparkle into your work wardrobe is not nearly as daunting as it sounds!  The pin-thin metallic stripes of this super affordable turtleneck provide the perfect touch of shimmer.
  • Expecting a sell out of this absolute favorite Reiss pleated midi which would look amazing with a classic white button-down in a creative workplace.  Currently have two sizes in my shopping cart (one of them has to fit and I’m not taking any chances!)…
  • If you’re looking to up the glam factor in your work wardrobe, look no further than this shimmering peach blazer (under $100!) and the coordinating trouser (under $50!!).  Maybe not for an accountant or government employee, but in the creative industries?  Killer.
  • Sparkling footwear is the perfect way to subtly rock this trend at work, and I’m completely obsessed with these metallic leather ankle-strap pumps (which are currently on major SALE with code FALLEVENT!).  Also check out these pointed toe beauties!
  • If you’re more of a dress kind of gal, you can’t go wrong with this knee-length classic black sheath.

BRB, OUT OF OFFICE

  • STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING and check out these pointed-toe metallic boots (they’re under $150!).  The sock boot silhouette is stunning, and I’m also into all four colors.
  • I’m loving this glam spin on a classic trench. The rich texture, double-breasted design and tied, raglan sleeves take this baby to the next level.
  • This black shimmer pullover looks like something I’ll be living in until next spring…
  • Next stop: Full-on sequined midi skirt.  I’m obsessed with how they styled it on the Net-A-Porter wesbite, paired with a slouchy, preppy sweater to dress down the sequins and amp up the cool factor x 100.
  • These embroidered flat loafers are just so dang FUN.
  • Why wait for the holidays to sport this one-shoulder sequined blouse when you could wear it next Saturday night?  DEAD.

After two weeks of exploring this season’s latest and greatest trends with the Fall Trend Memo series, I thought today would be the perfect day to raise a toast (clink, clink) to the timeless, classic pieces that can be worn season after season, year after year.  David Yurman, please stand up.

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Sara Battaglia red longline blazer, wide-leg pleated red trousers, a black Valentino studded leather shoulder bag and stacked David Yurman Solari braceletsMary Orton of Memorandum wears a Sara Battaglia red longline blazer, wide-leg pleated red trousers, a black Valentino studded leather shoulder bag, stacked David Yurman Solari bracelets and David Yurman pave stud earrings

David Yurman has always been a very special brand to me.  I remember losing. my. mind. when I received my first cable bracelet as a birthday gift from my grandparents.  Definitely one of those moments you never forget. One of the most iconic jewelry brands of all time, there aren’t enough words (or enough feels) for me to convey just how deep my love for David Yurman goes.

Timeless, elegant jewelry is the essential finishing touch to a polished ensemble, and nothing dresses up a classic suit like some classic bling.  Always game for an arm party, I never say no to stackable, mix-and-match bracelets which have long been my go-to in finishing off a look.  I recently discovered David Yurman’s new Solari collection, and let’s just say that Christmas is going to have to come early this year.  When it comes to these stunners, waiting for Santa is real life #selfcontrol goals.

Cue the DROOLFEST that is this combination of Solari bracelets.  Today I’ve stacked the onyx Solari bracelet with the Tahitian grey pearl Solari bracelet, and I honestly can’t choose a favorite.  Staying true to classic David Yurman style, the band of the bracelet is a petite version of the classic cable, but the ring of pave diamonds that circle each pearl end add just the right touch of elegance and interest.  These bracelets are perfect to wear to the office styled with a tailored suit, or styled with weekend basics to add a touch of polish.

Mary Orton wears a Sara Battaglia red longline blazer, wide-leg pleated red trousers and stacked David Yurman Solari bracelets

Today I’m also sporting the gorgeous pave diamond bracelet (which is truly breathtaking in person!) and this onyx and hematine beaded bracelet, adding the perfect amount of fun.  The deep onyx and hematine are the perfect complement to the head-to-toe statement red I’m wearing today, but would look just as beautiful with jeans.

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Sara Battaglia red longline blazer, wide-leg pleated red trousers, a black Valentino studded leather shoulder bag, stacked David Yurman Solari bracelets and David Yurman pave stud earrings

Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about my pave studs which certainly make an elegant statement, but are understated enough to wear with everything. These beauties, with hand-set pave diamonds surrounded by the classic David Yurman cable, add just the right amount of sparkle.

Whether these David Yurman pieces are mixed-and-matched or worn solo, there’s no question I’ll be wearing them for years to come.

9 Accessory Trends You Need To Know This Fall

0
0

Over the last few weeks, I’ve covered the biggest fashion trends of the season and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe for work and play.  However!  I ask you, what’s a great outfit without killer accessories?  Whether you’re looking for a full closet refresh or just a few on-trend touches to update your fall wardrobe, accessories are a great (budget-friendly!) place to start.  Today we’re taking a closer look at the best and brightest embellishments of the season by rounding up the top 9 accessory trends you need to know this fall.

1 //  Sock Boots

Mary Orton wears a Margiela emerald green cable knit turtleneck sweater, a Theory emerald green ruched satin midi skirt, black Stuart Weitzman sock booties and a multi jewel toned Tory Burch bag.

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

If there’s one item you plan to buy this fall, the sock boot should be your NUMERO UNO.  No matter what you’re wearing—a slinky skirt or boyfriend jeans—this killer boot will up your style game and keep your ankles cozy to boot (pun intended?).  Your days of pondering life’s mysteries such as “$#&% it’s cold, why is there an awkward gap between my boot and ankle?” are officially over.  You’ll see sock boots shine in every color, material, and style, from velvet and metallic for soirée-worthy events to athletic-inspired stripes for chic street style.  I can’t get enough of these black booties from Stuart Weitzman which I also recently wore here in red, but if you’re looking for an affordable alternative, check out this similar pair that’s under $150!

2//  Sculptural Earrings

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a cut out marigold ALC turtleneck sweater and Amber Sceats sculptural earrings

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Statement earrings first jumped on the scene a few seasons ago and the trend has been gaining momentum ever since.  This season, trade in your tassels and pompoms for geometric, artful shapes, especially in strong metals.  Linear, circular, and other structural-shaped baubles will be the front-runners in the ear candy game.  I’m swooning over these Amber Sceats shield-inspired earrings, but also check out these beauties (spoiler alert: they’re under $40!).

3 // Structured Bags

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Petar Petrov double breasted blazer, Petar Petrov tapered trousers, a black Mark Cross box bag and black cat eye sunglasses

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

It makes perfect sense that with the emergence of sculptural jewelry and clothing silhouettes (like power suiting!) we would see strong shapes in bags as well.  Structured bags are killing it this season, and this is one of my favorite trends, mostly because it’s the type of bag I gravitate towards no matter how the trend winds blow.  Most recently, you’ve seen bags like this black Mark Cross box bag, this multi jewel toned Tory Burch bag, and this mini M2Malletier beauty, but top of my wishlist is this sleek Theory beauty (under $400!) that comes in black and red.  Structured bag + sculptural earrings?  Who even needs cool clothes?

4 //  Retro Sunnies

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton wears Gucci wide leg side striped trousers, a classic white button down, white Elizabeth and James retro sunglasses and a red leather shoulder bag

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Retro sunglasses are YUUUGE this season, and luckily for us, this is the EASIEST accessory trend to rock.  There’s a style for every face shape, and Nordstrom’s killer BP. line (where basically every pair is $12) makes it crazy affordable to try any (or as many) styles that you like!  I’m also obsessed with these white Elizabeth and James sunnies, but if you’re looking for more classic retro shades, check out these $12 cat eye stunners!

5 //  Bold Red Lip

Mary Orton wears an off shoulder embroidered floral Sachin and Babi gown to a black tie wedding in France

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

You already know that statement red is officially THE color of fall, but if you’re not ready to rock a bright red power suit, rest-assured, this trend can easily be incorporated into your arsenal with a classic red lip.  Cue your inner T.Swift, ’cause there’s a perfect hue for every skin tone!

6 // Leopard Print

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a corduroy blazer, checked mini skirt, leopard print Sam Edelman ankle strap pumps and black cat eye sunglasses

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Leopard print fully attacked the fashion scene this season and while you certainly can’t go wrong with anything (and everything!) leopard, the easiest way to sport this trend is in the accessories.  If you’ve ever owned a leopard shoe or leopard bag, you know that the trend is somehow a counter-intuitive power neutral—pairing as easily with blacks and tans as does with fuchsia or plaid.  You’ll be seeing this fierce trend absolutely everywhere (if you aren’t already), from leopard print jackets (which I’m totally digging BTW), to sunnies, scarves and (insanely adorable) shoes.

7 //  Hats

One awesome PSA for the season: bad hair days no longer exist.  Chapeaus of all sorts are absolutely everywhere this fall, so have fun with the whimsy of berets, baker boys, fedoras… you name it.

8 //  Sparkling Accessories

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a black leather Valentino studded shoulder bag, silver metallic one shoulder Rebecca Minkoff blouse and Rachel Zoe metallic fringed midi skirt

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

Glitz and glam are having a moment indeed, and your extremities are not left out of this party.  ‘Tis the season to put a sparkle in your step… or on your arm… or wherever the heck you want.  From studded leather handbags to a full-on footwear shine fest, metallic, glitter and sparkling accessories of all sorts make for an elevated, updated look day or night.

9 //  Chain chain chain

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Sara Battaglia cropped check blazer, high waisted black pencil skirt, white satin camisole and a chain belt with pearl embellishments

Check out the full post on this outfit HERE.

80s-inspired chain accessories have officially jumped out of a pop culture music videos and re-entered your daily wardrobe.  I’m obsessing over chain belts (i.e. jewelry for your pants), but also keep an eye out for bold, layered chain link necklaces.

Three Fall Staples Every Working Girl Needs

0
0

SUEDE MOTO JACKET: Aqua  |  CASHMERE SWEATER: Aqua  |  BELTED CIGARETTE PANTS: Theory  |  POINTED-TOE PUMPS: Charles David (under $100 option HERE!)  |  RED LIP: Nars (Fire Down Below)

Fall has officially graced us with its presence (although I’m having real mixed feelings about this bipolar weather situation, TBH), which can only mean one thing: you’re finally coming to terms with the sorry state of your fall wardrobe.  If you’re like me, you’ve come to the conclusion that the ole closet is lacking some v pertinent cold-weather pieces, or at the very least, in need of a serious pick-me-up. (Where are all my sweaters?  Didn’t I have jackets last year?  Could’ve sworn I wore jackets…)

For New Yorkers, the conundrum is even more complex, as it’s a two-step process: (1) drag out storage boxes containing fall/winter wardrobe from storage unit and other weird nooks-turned-mini-storage-units in the apartment; and (2) reach the same aforementioned conclusion: NOT. ENOUGH. FALL.

Today, I’ve rounded up the top three wardrobe staples every working girl should refresh this season. Slow clap with me now…

#1 //  Versatile (super comfy) Wear-Everywhere Sweater

This staple is a no-brainer for the cooler seasons, and if you’re anything like me, it’s the same item that you’re pairing with trousers for the office and leggings for the weekend.  Pro tip: Check Aqua’s collection of cashmere sweaters at Bloomingdale’s and thank me later.  Today’s burgundy crewneck sweater is as easily dressed up for work (just add a classic trouser) as it is dressed down with denim, AND it’s every bit as comfy as it looks.  It’s part of the Aqua cashmere collection at Bloomingdales which has a TON of different styles and fits, all of which offer high-quality cashmere at a very reasonable price.  (Cashmere for under $200?  Sign me up!)  I just bought this one in color “toast” and this one in light grey.  DELISH.

#2 //  Staple Black Pants

A fresh pair of classic black pants are another obvious pick for a fall closet refresh, but just wait until you try on these Theory cigarette pants.  Super versatile and très, très comfy, these beauties have the perfect updated high-waisted fit making them the ideal choice for in or out of the office.  They have a sleek tapered leg and seem to suck you in in all the right places up top.  I can see them layering under knee or thigh-high boots nicely as well.  FYI, they come with the waist belt, but it isn’t sewn on so you can swap in a different belt when you’re feeling adventurous.

#3 //  Updated Moto Jacket

Pick numba three—the quintessential moto in an updated burgundy suede.  Everybody and their mother (maybe even grandma too at this point) has some iteration of the classic black leather moto jacket.  But since it’s so dang wearable (casual day at the office, weekend errands, Saturday night out…), this is the season to spring for a new, updated colored version like this opulent burgundy suede Moto.  Keep your eyes peeled for velvet Moto jackets too!

It’s worth noting that both the sweater and jacket I’m wearing today are from Bloomingdale’s 100% Exclusives collection, which as I’ve said before, is INSANELY good.  It’s stuff that is only sold at Bloomingdales (how stunning is this blouse?!), so it’s worth an extra look at items that you won’t come across at any other retailer.

SUEDE MOTO JACKET: Aqua  |  CASHMERE SWEATER: Aqua  |  BELTED CIGARETTE PANTS: Theory  |  POINTED-TOE PUMPS: Charles David (under $100 option HERE!)  |  RED LIP: Nars (Fire Down Below)

Thanks to Bloomingdale’s for partnering on this post!

Color Crush: Marigold

RUFFLED CREPE DRESS: Solace London  |  LEATHER BAG: JW Anderson  |  ANKLE STRAP SANDALS: Sam Edelman  |  RED LIP: Nars (Fire Down Below)

Today, I’m sharing some unpublished photos from a project I worked on with Net-A-Porter a few weeks back.  Since this Solace London frock is basically sunshine in dress form, I thought it would be the perfect excuse to highlight one of the biggest color trends for fall—marigold yellow!

To be honest, when this color started showing up everywhere, I was convinced that there were only about four people on planet earth who could pull off such a bold golden hue (and I was not one of them).  However, I eventually took the plunge (literally—I basically bathed in marigold yellow in this post), and I’m so glad I did.  It’s surprisingly flattering on many skin tones, and one trick I’ve employed to balance out the strong golds is to pair the color with a deep red lip.  Additionally, as you’ll see in the line-up below, the color looks incredible against denim.  Just look at how they styled this amazing coat with a red lip and perfect blue jeans.  Gorge.

Below, I’ve rounded up my favorite marigold yellow pieces for the season.  I think this stunner would be amazing for the office and how perfect are these loafers?!  Let me know which one you like best!

Plaid Midi Skirt + Puffed-Shoulder Turtleneck

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Burberry plaid checked midi skirt, a black puffed-shoulder turtleneck, black Stuart Weitzman sock boots and a black baker boy cap

PUFFED-SHOULDER TURTLENECK: Anthropologie (it also comes in pink!)  |  PLEATED CHECKED MIDI SKIRT: Burberry (also loving this plaid skirt and this under $50 beauty!)  | SOCK BOOT: Stuart Weitzman (virtually identical under $150 dupe HERE)  | HANDBAG: M2Malletier  |  BLACK LEATHER WAIST BELT: Gucci  |  BAKER BOY HAT: Brixton

If you saw my recent post on the top accessory trends of the season, then you already know two things: (1) these Stuart Weitzman sock boots are likely not leaving my feet this season (check out this virtually identical dupe under $200), and (2) this baker boy hat is likely not leaving my head.

But even when sporting some of my favorite seasonal trends, I always like to take a classic approach to dressing.  Grounding today’s look is this pleated plaid midi skirt, a timeless staple that’ll never go out of style.  I’m also loving this plaid midi skirt and this under $50 beauty as well!

Today’s puffed-shoulder turtleneck is another cold-weather favorite, which I recently wore here with a mini skirt and over-the-knee boots for drinks and dinner with friends.  The shoulder detailing not only elevates the wardrobe staple, but also offers a modern spin on the classic black turtleneck—perfect for both the office or an evening out.

Workwear Go-To: The Best Statement Blazers

STRIPED BLAZER: Alexa Chung  |   CLASSIC TURTLENECK: old, under $100 dupes HERE and HERE  |  STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS: old, similar HERE and under $100 HERE  |  LEATHER WAIST BELT: Gucci  |  DISC EARRINGS: Madewell  |  RED LIP: Laura Mercier (Lover)

As you know from my recent Fall/Winter Trend Memo series, this season is all about being bold.  We’ve talked power dressing, vibrant colors and statement accessories, so it’s probably no surprise that statement blazers are on the shortlist of must-haves for fall and winter 2017.

Blazers are having a MAJOR moment, which is pretty awesome for working girls everywhere, ’cause it makes dressing for the office a #cinch.  No more wasting time every morning trying to jumble together an outfit—just throw on your favorite basics and the blazer does all the talking.  Exhibit A: this Alexa Chung striped blazer.  I’ve chosen to style it with my favorite denim and a classic turtleneck for a business casual look, but it can easily be dressed up with the matching trouser (dead) or a sleek burgundy sheath dress (how stunning is this one?!).

When it comes to blazers this season, you can make a statement with vibrant colors, fun textures (got my eye on you, velvet), bold patterns, or interesting detail.  Of course, the biggest blazer trend of the season has to be the classic oversized plaid blazer (I just bought this one!) but below, I’ve rounded up all of my favorites.  I’m obsessing over this double breasted striped blazer (it’s $150!), and this leopard print beauty has me in FULL. SWOON.

4 Winter Coats Every Girl Should Own

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Smythe floral jacquard coat, a light pink v-neck sweater, light-wash denim and a JW Anderson leather bagMary Orton of Memorandum wears a Smythe floral jacquard coat, a light pink v-neck sweater, light-wash denim and a JW Anderson leather bag FLORAL JACQUARD COAT: Smythe  |  V-NECK SWEATER: Halogen  |  LIGHT-WASH DENIM: Good American  |  LOAFERS: old, love this pair  |  LEATHER BELT: Halogen  |  BAG: J.W. Anderson (similar HERE and under $100 HERE)

With winter around the corner, it’s time to prep your arsenal of outerwear for plunging temps.  We’re less than a week away from November (HOW?!), and unfortunately, I know from experience that denial does not keep you warm.  Today, I’m rounding up the four coats every girl needs for the chilly days ahead.

But before we jump into my list, I want to make special note of Nordstrom’s dedicated collection of outerwear that’s all under $200 which you can peruse here.  If you’re looking to update your coat collection with some amazing, affordable beauties, that’s your spot.

Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Smythe floral jacquard coat, a light pink v-neck sweater, light-wash denim, classic loafers and a JW Anderson leather bag

Without further ado, I give you the four staple coats everyone needs in their closet for fall and winter…

#1 //  Puffer Coat

For those brutally frigid days, you gotta go for the puffer coat (a.k.a. wearable sleeping bag) and luckily, these beauties are majorly on trend this season.  Uber insulated and super lightweight, nothing holds in warmth like these down-filled, quilted puffers.

  • I’m obsessing over this longline quilted puffer coat with faux-fur trim that I found at Nordstrom (and it’s under $150!).  Not only does it come in three gorgeous colors, it’s also water-repellent!  If you’re in the market for a shorter option under $150, check out this quilted puffer from Topshop (it also comes in black!).
  • For all my Canada Goose fans, check out this power-fill down jacket, which promises to keep you warm even in the coldest temps.  The drawcord waist cinches in perfectly, and the water-resistant outer layer keeps you dry in rain, sleet or snow.
  • In the $250 and under price range, it doesn’t get better than this belted Ralph Lauren down coat.  The longline silhouette and drawcord hood will keep you cozy and the tie belt keeps you from (fully) resembling a marshmallow.  Added bonus: you’ll stand out from a sea of black in this perfect burgundy hue!
  • If you’re looking to venture into new textures, check out this black velour beaut!

#2 //  Classic Wool Coat

A no-brainer, but gotta mention it: everyone needs a classic wool coat.  Timeless, elegant and versatile, this quintessential winter wardrobe staple is as perfect for layering atop your work-week suit as it is paired with casual weekend denim.  Nothing pulls together an outfit like a timeless tailored coat—it’s the perfect finishing touch (and nobody needs to know if you’re wearing a suit or your pajama top underneath).

NYC fashion blogger Mary Orton of Memorandum wears a Smythe floral jacquard coat, a light pink v-neck sweater, light-wash denim and a JW Anderson leather bag

#3 //  Moto Jacket

Trading classic for cool, the moto is the go-to jacket to throw on for less formal occasions—whether you’re headed out to drinks or running errands on the weekend.  There’s not much I love more than a classic black moto, but if you read this post, you already know I’m reaallyyyy digging the updated colors and finishes that are stealing the stage this season.

  • “Ultimate Leather Jacket” is the name of this classic moto, and I couldn’t agree more… It’s well-worth the investment.  Also check out this under-$100 classic black beauty!
  • Step up your moto game with this suede jacket.
  • If you’re all in on the metallic trend this season, go full-glam with a metallic moto (it’s under $200!).
  • I’m loving the rich burgundy color of this faux-leather jacket. The price point isn’t bad either!
  • Last but certainly not least, this floral black leather jacket from Topshop proves you can be tough and feminine.

#4 //  Statement Coat

You know those days when you’re running around and end up spending more time in your coat than just wearing your actual clothing underneath?  (I’m looking at you, New Yorkers!)  Those are the days for the statement coat, a.k.a. your outerwear outfit.  Pile on the dark/neutral cozy layers underneath and let your outerwear do the talking.  A statement coat like the floral beauty I’m wearing today instantly dresses up an otherwise basic outfit.

Rainbow Dressing: Striped Midi Skirt and Coordinating Sweater

0
0

Although I love a good #allblackeverything look as much as the next gal, I’m really embracing all. things. COLORFUL this fall and winter.  With designers channeling the rainbow in their approach to knits, wools, coats, and accessories for winter, ’tis the season to make a statement.

Today’s colorful coordinating sweater and midi skirt from Kenzo are among my absolute favorite finds this fall (as you may have noticed from the number of times I’ve worn this outfit on Instagram lately…).  On days when you just can’t decide what color to sport, just wear ’em all!  Of course, the pieces in this set are styled separately just as easily as they are together: pair the sweater with your favorite black trousers or throw a chic turtleneck (how cute is this one?!) atop the midi skirt and you’re ready for wherever the day may take you.

Below I’ve rounded up my favorite rainbow-inspired picks of the season.  I can’t get enough of this color-blocked sweater or this tailored cobalt wool-blend coat (under $200!).

5 Staple Tops To Get You Through Winter

0
0

Before jumping into today’s post, I wanted to mention that tomorrow is the start of the Fall/Winter 2017 30 Dresses in 30 Days series right here on Memorandum!! Get exciteddddd!

After last week’s post detailing the 4 Winter Coats Every Girl Should Own, I’ve had tons of requests for more winter staples, so today I thought I’d cover the quintessential cold-weather tops, from staple turtlenecks to cashmere sweaters to silk blouses and everything in-between.  Stay tuned for essential winter pants, dresses, shoes and accessories in the near future.  Building a capsule winter wardrobe seems like a daunting task, but taking it category-by-category makes it a little more digestible.  Read on for the five staple tops (mostly sweaters, of course!) that every girl should have in her closet this fall and winter…

#1 //  Chunky Knit Turtleneck

Nothing pulls together a cozy winter look more seamlessly than a trusty textured turtleneck (i.e. your winter cocoon).  Throw a chunky cable-knit sweater atop your favorite denim and over-the-knee boots for an easy, comfy look (that you’ll never want to take off), or up the ante with a pleated midi skirt and leather booties!

  • OBSESSED with this under $150 Banana Republic x Olivia Palermo cable-knit turtleneck.  Check out the gorgeous lace accents!
  • This may be the most perfect cable-knit turtleneck sweater I’ve found this season, in my favorite color to boot…
  • I just bought this dreamy sweater in two colors, and am trying to rationalize purchasing the other two as well… #sendhelp

#2 //  Cashmere Sweater

When the temperatures get truly arctic, nothing keeps the warmth in and the cold out quite like cashmere.  Every girl should have a quality cashmere sweater in her closet for work and/or play, not only because of the warmth factor but also because these suckers really stand the test of time.

#3 //  Long Sleeve Silk Blouse

A classic silk blouse is an investment piece that’s worth every penny.  One of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe, a silk blouse is just as perfect with a workweek suit or skirt and blazer as it is dressed down with denim and a classic wool coat on the weekend.

  • I own several silk blouses from Equipment like this essential silk blouse and they are the absolute BEST.  They don’t go out of style, and you’ll wear them like crazy for years.
  • If you’re looking for added interest, check out this gorgeous ruffled tie-neck silk blouse.
  • I just bought this v-neck silk beauty and am obsessed with the draped wrap detail.

#4 //  Layering Turtleneck

For colder months, a layering turtleneck is as essential as a toothbrush—it’s downright bad manners not to have one.  A classic cut in a breathable, lightweight fabric provides just the right amount of insulation without being too bulky layered underneath a blazer or sheath dress.

#5 //  Classic Long-Sleeve T-Shirt

Nothing can take you from a Netflix binge sesh to Whole Foods to drinks with friends faster than a classic long-sleeve tee.  This is the piece you’ll wear most often, so pick a soft, cozy fabric that you wouldn’t mind living in all season.

  • This Madewell striped beauty really is the quintessential long-sleeve tee.
  • I’ve been obsessed with Vince’s long-sleeve t-shirts for years because they really stand the test of time (i.e. not stretched out and faded after the first wash or two).  This suuuper soft crewneck tee comes in black, white and grey (and it’s under $100!).
  • For all my babes on a budget, check out this $30 classic crewneck from J. Crew.  You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better intersection of price and quality.

Kicking off the Fall/Winter 2017 30 Dresses in 30 Days series with the quintessential fall dress!

30 Dresses In 30 Days: Fall/Winter 2017

DENIM DRESS: See by Chloe  |  OVER-THE-KNEE BOOTS: Marc Fisher (old, similar HERE and HERE!)  |  LAYERING TURTLENECK: Three Dots  |  FAUX SHEARLING MOTO JACKET: Zara (also love this jacket under $100!)  |  LEATHER CIRCLE BELT: Frame (sold out in brown, available in black HERE; under $50 dupe HERE!)  |  BURGUNDY HANDBAG: YSL  |  CAT EYE SUNGLASSES: Crap Eyewear

Happy November!!  Today I am so thrilled to kick off the Fall/Winter 2017 edition of my 30 Dresses in 30 Days series!  I’m so grateful for your amazing response to the 30 Dresses in 30 Days series in the past (can you believe we’re on season FOUR?!), so I’m super excited to get going on what I hope will be the best series yet.  If you’re new to Memorandum, here’s the skinny: every day for the next 30 days, I’ll be posting a new dress on the 30 Dresses portal.   Each post will be geared towards a specific Fall/Winter occasion—everything from favorite fall activities like today’s fall bonfire dress, to holiday party dresses, winter work dresses and many more!

In addition to providing a fun collection of my favorite dresses, my goal with this series is to offer a true resource for navigating all of the season’s occasions—many of which really sneak up on us this time of year.  Especially in the lead up to the holidays, work and life often get in the way of planning ahead for the parties, events, trips, weddings and other occasions that make the fall and winter seasons so special.  Whether you have a Thanksgiving soiree, a formal office holiday party or a family ski trip on the calendar, feeling like you “have nothing to wear” shouldn’t hold you back from enjoying all of the festivities (…especially because they pretty much all involve lots of booze and food, two things that should never be foregone due to a clothing dilemma).

But even worse than feeling like you don’t have the right dress to wear is feeling like you actually don’t even know what the appropriate dress is for the occasion.  Holy panic button.  What do I wear to a fall bridal shower?!  What does one wear to a winter wedding?  Is it cool to wear footie pajamas and a quilted puffer to a client meeting when it’s -700 degrees out?!

If you’ve stressed about these sartorial challenges in the past, stress no more.  Over the next 30 days, I’ll be breaking down every upcoming fall and winter occasion, so you can just focus on the stuff that really matters, like your Black Friday shopping strategy or how you’re going to make conversation with your weird Aunt Karen at Thanksgiving.  (pro tip: hard alcohol)

From here on out, I’ll be sharing the dresses exclusively on the 30 Dresses in 30 Days portal HERE (and a few peeks on instagram, of course!), with links to the exact dress I’m wearing plus styling tips, affordable options and several additional styles that I think are perfect for the occasion.  I’ll also be sharing additional exclusive content with my email subscribers, so if you haven’t signed up yet, get the memo here!

Without further ado, hop on over to the 30 Dresses portal to check out more of day one!!

The Best Over-The-Knee Boots At Every Price

PUFFED-SHOULDER TURTLENECK: Anthropologie  |  KHAKI MINI SKIRT: C/MEO (old, but love this khaki mini and this midi skirt!)  |  OVER-THE-KNEE BOOTS: c/o Stuart Weitzman (affordable alternative HERE)  |  SHAPING SHEERS: Spanx  |  SHOULDER BAG: YSL

Over-the-knee boots are undoubtedly one of my FAVORITE things about the fall/winter season.  Few other clothing or accessory items can boast style, cool factor, AND functionality to boot (see what I did there?).  Today I’m sharing some of my favorite over-the-knee boots at all price points, along with some special details on the pair I’m wearing!

I recently found these Stuart Weitzman beauties on Olivela.com, which you HAVE TO CHECK OUT because it’s an amazing site that allows you to buy what you love AND give back.  Here’s how it works: on olivela.com, you purchase the items that you love from the world’s leading luxury brands (like Stuart Weitzman and many others), and Olivela gives a portion of the proceeds to charitable causes like the GOOD+ Foundation which partners with a national network of leading programs to provide essential, transformational family services.  The products they sell are the exact products at the exact price you might buy from any other retailer, but by purchasing through Olivela, you have the opportunity to make a huge difference.  Please please check them out and keep them in mind throughout the holiday shopping season!

Super versatile on chilly days, over-the-knee boots pair just as perfectly with skinny jeans or leggings as they do with a classic mini skirt—or even layered under a midi skirt.   Check out a few of my favorite over-the-knee boots below at all price points.  I’m completely obsessed with the reigning king of the over-the-knee boot game—Stuart Weitzman—because I now own more pairs than I’d like to admit of SW over-the-knee boots and they’ve lasted winter after winter and countless (I mean COUNTLESS) wears without breaking down or showing their age.  However, there are some other great OTK boots at lower price points too, so check out the round-up below!  Almost every single boot below comes in multiple colors so if there’s a style that speaks to you, give it a click you can see all of the different color options…
