Happy Friday!  A few snaps from Mother’s Day last week after we picked up these blooms from my local flower obsession—The Bud Stop on Union Street here in San Francisco—and then zipped off to a celebratory brunch!  The crop top and flare skirt coordinates I wore are the comfiest pieces ever, and the skirt is long enough on most to pass at the office.  Can’t wait to get a lot of use out of these puppies all spring and summer long!

I think it’s finally safe to say that spring and summer are actually going to happen this year (San Francisco’s weather in March and April had me second guessing).  Today, I’ve rounded up the five trends to know this season to help navigate your warm-weather shopping!  Whether it’s victorian-inspired necklines, lace-up heels, or a swank pair of track pants, these are the top fashion trends that will take you from workweek to weekend…

FOUR TIPS FOR THE PERFECT HONEYMOON

$

If you haven’t decided  when or where to go on your honeymoon, start by reading my first post on how to approach the planning process and how to choose the honeymoon destination that’s right for you.  Check it out here!

So you’ve booked your flights and made all your hotel/resort reservations… now what?  If you’re consumed by wedding planning and worried that prepping for your honeymoon is falling by the wayside, don’t sweat it, just read on, soldier.  Today, in addition to sharing some location-specific details from part one of our honeymoon in the Seychelles, I’m first sharing four mission-critical tips that will ensure your honeymoon experience is unforgettable…

honeymoon couples massagesunset dinner honeymoon

1.  PLAN SPECIAL EXPERIENCES AND ACTIVITIES BEFORE YOU LEAVE

This isn’t just another vacation, this is your honeymoon!   Be sure to plan a few extra special moments to break up the trip and distinguish it from your typical vacay.  Sometimes this means making reservations for special meals or fun excursions before you arrive.  In our case, Rich made a reservation to have a private dinner on the beach on our first night in the Seychelles as a special kick off to the trip.  We also made plans to have a couples’ massage during our stay and hired a guide and small boat to take us on a snorkeling and hiking daytrip to some small neighboring islands.  These special experiences made our honeymoon all the more memorable.

2.  INFORM YOUR COLLEAGUES AND CLIENTS

Make special efforts to inform all of your work colleagues and clients of your honeymoon plans.  Include specific dates in your email out-of-office and include the contact information of coworkers’ who can respond to questions or emergencies while you’re gone.  Unlike regular vacations where you might occasionally be asked to check in or do a little work here and there, it’s important to really disconnect (really!) on your honeymoon, so manage expectations with colleagues and clients accordingly.  This is all coming from a workaholic extraordinaire that rarely (read: never) disconnects from my job, even on vacations.  I took a different approach when preparing to leave for our honeymoon which made for many grueling late nights leading up to the wedding to make sure everything work-wise was covered and done ahead of time, but it was the absolute best thing I could have done.  Rich and I were able to be fully present and soak up every last moment of our special trip.

fashion blogger mirror selfie

3.  GET A GOOD CAMERA (AND A SELFIE STICK!)

For this trip, you may want to venture beyond your iPhone photos and invest in something a little nicer.  We’re super into photography, so we brought our Canon 5D Mark III, a GoPro, and a simple point-and-shoot.  If you’re not a photography freak, there are tons of great point-and-shoot cameras (this one is fantastic and connects directly to your phone) and if buying a new camera for the trip isn’t in the cards, look into rental options.  We’ve used BorrowLenses.com repeatedly to rent camera equipment for one-off projects or trips, and even rented a few special lenses from the them for our honeymoon.  You can rent everything from the simplest point-and-shoot cameras to high-end professional photography accessories for very reasonable prices.

As for a selfie stick, believe me, no one enjoys ridiculing them more than yours truly.  However, I got one in a gift bag at a conference a couple years ago, and after jokingly fooling around with it, I actually realized that there are some merits to the devices. [insert embarrassed emoji here] Especially if you’re off exploring without lots of people around to help snap a couples photo, there are easy ways to hold the selfie stick from a side angle so that the embarrassing pole isn’t visible in the picture and you’re able to come home with lots of great pictures of the two of you.  Get one that can hold your phone and/or point-and-shoot camera and no one has to know.

4.  PACK TWO WEEKS AHEAD OF WEDDING FESTIVITIES

If you’re leaving for your honeymoon shortly after your wedding day, start packing at least TWO WEEKS (seriously) before your wedding.  You may think you’ll have time in the days before the wedding, but you will be shocked at all of the last minute things that come up and demand your attention.  There’s nothing worse than arriving at your honeymoon destination having forgotten lots of necessary items, or missing time with your family and friends on the day of the rehearsal dinner or wedding day because you’re rushing to pack for the honeymoon last minute.

Pinstripe Blazer, Mom Jeans and White Pumps

Happy Friday!!  I can’t tell you how good it feels to say that.  It’s been a real doozy of a work week which included some major technological and internet malfunctions (Comcast=Lord Voldemort), hence the relatively sparse posting this week.  But things are looking up!  The weekend is almost here, and today I’m sharing two new favorites that are each, in their own right, the. actual. bomb.

bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton2bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton9

The first is this pinstripe blazer that’s basically the most immaculate creation since N*Sync dropped their debut album.  The longline cut, the shawl collar, the drape?  It’s the Justin Timberlake of blazers.  The second is this pair of perfect light-but-not-too-light wash mom jeans that basically have made all my dreams of becoming Kelly Kapowski come true minus the flawless brunette mane and cheerleader charm… and maybe like one or 4,000 other things.

bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton5bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton8

Honestly, I have been searching for the perfect high-waisted tapered leg light wash jeans for almost three years, and not only did I finally spot them, but when my eyes darted down frantically to find the sub-$100 price tag, I’m not positive, but I’m 99.9% certain that somewhere, out-of-sight, Celine Dion sang a triumphant rendition of I Drove All Night (to get to youuuuu) and a rainbow appeared overhead as I clutched the nearly 100% cotton, high-waisted masterpiece in my arms.

 bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton6 bcbgmaxazria-pinstripe-blazer-cheap-monday-light-wash-high-waisted-mom-jeans-sjp-collection-fawn-white-leather-pumps-casual-friday-work-style-wear-fashion-blog-san-francisco-sf-mary-orton4

That is to say that I was shopping online from my couch, so in that particular moment, there wasn’t so much a physical price tag, an actual rainbow or a lot of clutching of the jeans themselves, persay, but Celine Dion was playing in the background because when do I not have Celine Dion playing in the background?  So that’s still a fairly accurate description of the moment.

Whether you pair the blazer with jeans for a casual Friday ensemble or turn it up with a sleek pencil skirt for a more business formal look, it’s an amazing, classic piece to add to your work wardrobe (and play wardrobe!) and it’s currently 30% off!  Soooo it may have technically been a crummy work week, but finding both my new favorite jeans under $100 AND the best blazer of all time on major sale?  That’s God’s work is what that is.

Spring Dinner Party At Our Home

I’m not sure if I love to throw dinner parties at our house because I love having our friends over, or if I just love to legitimize purchasing an otherwise-inappropriate amount of overpriced fresh cut flowers.  Ok, the company is definitely the best, but the flowers are a close second.

The party prep started with a flower run during the lunch hour on Friday, first to my favorite corner floral shop in the neighborhood, and then to Trader Joe’s where they happened to have an actual ocean of peonies, hydrangeas and other gorgeous flowers at prices that immediately made me regret running errands in this order.  Word to the wise—in the spring when all of these beauties are in season, head straight to TJ’s and hoard away.  I only learned this after basically wasting my future children’s college tuition on overpriced peonies elsewhere.  If you follow me on snapchat (maryorton) you know that the pain was very real.

Sometimes our 9-to-5 jobs mean we don’t have all the time in the world to pull together a dinner party.  If this is true for you, check out my five easy entertaining tips for the working girl HERE and you’ll see how easy it is to trick people into thinking you’re Betty Draper.  I love to keep a lot of house plants—both large and small—throughout our apartment, and the small ones in particular can come in super handy when throwing together a centerpiece.  As you can see below, I threw a small wheatgrass plant between some low bunches of peonies that I picked up on Friday, and between that a simple linen table runner and a bunch of tea lights that I had in the cupboard, my table was ready for action.

Layered Scallop Sweater and Ankle-Zip Jeans

I wore this look on Monday for a typical work day here in San Francisco where the spring weather was anything but predictable.  The pale hues and white pumps made me feel springy, while the layered sweater over a white button down and light jacket kept that aggressive wind at bay (yep, that isn’t a wind machine whipping my hair around).

I snagged these ankle zip skinny jeans around Christmas time, and have really loved their subtle ability to mix up my skinny jean game.  Distressed denim is usually my go-to when I want my jeans to have a little extra stylistic oomph, but they aren’t always so great for work.  Alternatively, the ankle-zip jeans I’m wearing today offer that extra bit of interest, while still looking more polished and professional than my ripped skinnies or boyfriend jeans.

I recently snagged this cute scallop-edged sweater which also comes in coral and black, and adorable dress versions here and here.  While the San Francisco weather is in the 60s, I love the sweater layered over a white button down as seen today, but on sunnier days this summer, I look forward to wearing it solo with skirts and shorts.

Louise et Cie, a brand launched only a few years ago by Vince Camuto’s wife Louise, quickly became one of my favorite footwear brands because they always managed to hit that perfect mix of modern and classic elements (Exhibit A: these sandals and these slides… dying!).  It was no surprise that their recent expansion into handbags was just as winning in my book, starting with this perfect suede shoulder bag.  Bringing in boho trends with the beautiful suede exterior and a classic flap silhouette, you’ll definitely be seeing this beauty on repeat all summer (and well into the fall!).  The perfect size and perfect golden brown hue, it works as well with a dressy black and white monochromatic look like today’s as it does with jeans and a t-shirt for Sunday brunch.  Check out the rest of their bags, especially this gorgeous blush tote if you’re in the market for a great summer work tote.

HONEYMOONING AT THE FOUR SEASONS SEYCHELLES

If the Four Seasons Seychelles is on your list of possible honeymoon destinations, well, all I can say is that it was truly the most idyllic, magical experience, and made for an absolutely unforgettable start to our honeymoon.  We legit got choked up when it was time to leave… which is humiliating, but true.  A bit about our stay…

four seasons seychelles

A short walk from the beach, we stayed in the most idyllic completely private villa with two decks, an infinity pool, an outdoor shower, and a gazebo-encapsulated daybed—all completely secluded and overlooking an unobstructed westward-facing view of the most breathtaking turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.  Somebody pinch me.

Just off the resort’s private beach with immaculate white powder sand, there are several beautiful pools and lounge areas along with bars, dining, gym facilities, you name it.  We spent much of our time relaxing on comfy beach beds right on the beach reading in between swims, kayaking and snorkeling.

In terms of service, I can’t imagine a more friendly or helpful staff.  Throughout the day, attendants would come by our beach beds to offer fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, pineapple or watermelon spears, and iced towels.  All of the staff knew we were on our honeymoon and constantly made extra efforts to make the stay extra special.  Upon initial arrival to our villa, we found a beautiful (and DELICIOUS) “Happy Honeymoon” cake waiting for us with hibiscus flowers and fresh fruit on the coffee table in a little sitting area near the entrance.  Venturing further inside, we found a bubble bath in our huge marble tub with flower petals strewn around, two champagne glasses and a bottle of Veuve chilling nearby.  Not only did this make for an incredibly special welcome, but amazing surprise treats were waiting for us every afternoon when we returned to our villa.

Aside from reading under an umbrella on the most comfortable beach beds in history, swimming, snorkeling and kayaking in the bay, and hiking the trails around the resort, we took a few day trips to see more of the Seychelles.  One morning we hired a driver to give us a tour of the main island and bring us to the capital city, Victoria, where we checked out the Fish Market and got a little local flavor.  Another day was spent boating to neighboring islands, snorkeling in the clearest, bluest water I’ve ever seen and meeting the incredible indigenous tortoise population!

I still dream about the unreal breakfasts we would have each morning in their hillside restaurant overlooking the water.  For lunch we either ordered something to eat on the beach, or went to one of the poolside restaurants.  With the most mind-blowing pastries, fresh fruit, and fresh seafood each meal seemed even better than the last.

Each night before dinner, we either watched the sunset from our deck or infinity pool with glasses of champagne, or walked along the beach as the sun went down.  We then either walked to one of the amazing resort restaurants or enjoyed dinner right in our villa.

I could go on about this place forever—the views, the white powdery sand, the turquoise water, the spa, the MEALS, the friendly people—every second was absolutely exquisite.  It was the most blissful, heavenly ten days of my life.

As previously mentioned, we decided to split our honeymoon into two parts: the first part relaxing and recharging on the beach in the Seychelles, and the second part on a safari adventure in South Africa.  Since both destinations were a bit off the beaten path, we turned to our unbelievably helpful friends at World Odyssey who seamlessly guided us through the planning process.  I can’t recommend them highly enough if you’re looking to plan an exotic honeymoon or vacation!  Stay tuned for my next post with all of my packing and planning tips for a safari!

And ahhhhh let’s chat about this amazing dress-turned-vest!  You may recall from this recent triple threat that I’m a huge fan of dresses that can be worn multiple ways, and this dress certainly fits the bill.  Worn buttoned up with classic pumps and a tote, there’s no question it’s a spectacular dress for business formal workdays. However, as I suggested in the aforementioned triple threat post, opening it up and wearing it as a casual topper might be even more exciting.  The vibrant red color, the uber-flattering cut, the versatility offering major bang for your buck… what more do you need?   Multiple colors and petite, regular and tall sizing options you say?  No prob!  They took care of all that as well.  Checkmate.

When I originally ordered this midi dress, it was shown on the Bloomingdales website as having a crewneck front and a v-back—essentially the reverse of how you see me wearing it today.  However, when it arrived, I found that the tag is actually sewn on the inside of the crewneck side, signaling that the v-back is actually a v-neck front.  I’m not sure if this was a manufacturing error with misplaced tags, or if the stylists/model at Bloomingdales accidentally photographed it backwards, but regardless, I’ve now tried it on both ways and the knit construction allows it to be worn very comfortably either way.  I don’t think it was necessarily intended to be reversible, but the reality is that you’re basically getting two dresses for the price of one!  Error or not, that’s a major win in my book.

I wore this last friday to the Baccalaureate Mass for my younger brother’s college graduation.  Not only can it be worn backwards or forwards, but the dress’s midi length and classic cut makes it perfect for everything from summer workdays, to rehearsal dinners, or even weddings themselves.

I wore this dress last weekend to my younger brother’s college graduation, and I was hardly in the dress for 30 seconds before my brothers started spewing all sorts of Claire Underwood jokes.  They’ve spent a lifetime perfecting the art of ridiculing literally anything and everything I wear (with the exception of my wedding dress… they were forced to stand down on my wedding day), but despite their best efforts, I couldn’t help but take each Claire Underwood wisecrack as a massive compliment.  That is, assuming the comparison was limited to her style and not her sociopathic tendencies.

Much like the black and white striped knit dress that I wore to my little bro’s baccalaureate mass, this ivory number is another classic, amazingly versatile dress.  I could definitely see it in any professional setting, but as illustrated here, it also certainly goes for those extra-curricular events where something classic and dressy is needed.  Somehow, inexplicably, I’ve been asked to be the godmother of my new baby nephew (I know, there must’ve been a clerical error…) but parental lapse in judgment or not, I am PUMPED and looking forward to wearing this ivory number again for the baptism.

Since I knew I’d be standing for most of graduation day, I snagged these black leather ankle strap sandals with a two inch kitten heel before leaving, and absolutely loved them.  After being on my feet from the early morning to the late afternoon, there wasn’t a barking dog in sight ; ) They come in about a million other colors too (here and more here on sale!), and I’m definitely thinking of snagging another pair.

It was raining on and off all day, so I brought this classic double-breasted jacket with me which came in really handy.  Although it’s quite an investment piece, the classic cut and impeccable quality ensures that it will be something I wear (literally) forever.  If you’re a fan of the gold double-breasted look, check out this blazer at a much more affordable price point.  I just received it in the mail and am a huge fan!

Sharing one more dress from my little bro’s graduation last weekend.  I wore this navy off-the-shoulder maxi to evening graduation parties and festivities in Massachusetts, and I think it’s now officially my favorite dress for summer.  The navy hue and flowy fabric make it as well-suited for daytime festivities as it is for nighttime soirees.  AND, it packs like a dream and doesn’t require any steaming or ironing, so whether you’re traveling this summer or just looking for a summer frock that you can throw into your work tote for changing into before aprés-office plans, this dress is the ticket.

I’m going to be traveling for quite a bit of July in Europe, and I’m thinking of investing in a few more flowy off-the-shoulder maxis (like this incredible white one) because aside from the packing ease, they’re just. so. COMFY.  And, hypothetically speaking, if one were to plan on carbo-loading for like 18 days straight in Europe, the flowy factor is #majorkey.  Hypothetically speaking, of course.

As you know, I’m a huge fan of a monochromatic blush look.  Similar to my all-blush look from this post a few months ago, today’s outfit is comprised of four pieces that I purchased separately, but somewhere in the depths of my exceptionally disorganized closet, they met and fell into monochromatic love.  See mom?  If my closet was organized, this blush blazer and blush midi dress might never have met!  But even though the blazer, dress, belt and pumps aren’t from the same brand or store, the beautiful thing about all-blush and/or nude outfits is that you really don’t have to worry about the hues matching perfectly for the ensemble to work.

If you’re looking for the perfect, super comfy summer midi dress, look no further.  The soft jersey of this blush frock makes it unbelievably comfortable, and as easily layered under a blazer as it is worn solo on weekends or after office hours.  My only note on the dress is that after wearing it to a luncheon recently (as pictured today, with the blazer, etc.), I think I’ll probably have a tailor shorten the straps a tad before wearing it to the office.  I’m wearing a size small in this dress, and after wearing it for a bit, the straps seemed to fall a bit long to me, resulting in a neckline that’s on the low side for the workplace.  The dress is so reasonably priced and so fantastic otherwise (umm, hello POCKETS), I think it’s absolutely worth $5-10 at the tailor to make the simple adjustment, or quite frankly, I’ll probably just shorten them at home! #newDIYproject

The Best Father’s Day Gifts!

last minute fathers day gift

After a fairly hectic last several weeks, Father’s Day has really snuck up on me.  With a packed work week ahead, there’s going to be very little time to run out and find the right gifts, so I’m lucky to have recently stumbled upon Macy’s e-gifting option, which is an absolute LIFESAVER (fo real) if you’re a last-minute Lucy like me.  Listen to how genius this is…

fathers day online shoppingmacys e-gift

You find the right gift for your dad (see my gift guide below for ideas!) and click the E-GIFT THIS ITEM link located right below the gray ADD TO LIST icon.  You then can write a personalized message and indicate exactly what date the gift email should be sent.  Gift recipients will receive an email on the date you indicate and will have a thoughtful gift opening experience online with an item you’ve personally selected for them, while still being able to adjust the size/color or exchange it for something else before it ships!  All the feels, none of the fuss.  I’m in.

macys fathers day shoppinghow to e-gift for fathers dayfathers day gift ideas

Let’s face it, Dads are IMPOSSIBLE TO SHOP FOR.  I think 90% of my Dad’s gifts over the years have been opened with emphatic gratitude, and then promptly returned or thrown in a closet, never to be seen again.  So, what’s the solution for someone like me who (a) is determined to offer a personal gift, but (b) has a terrible track record of landing the right item (not to mention the right size, color, etc.), and (c) has a biiiiiiit of a tight timeframe to work within…

fashion blogger shopping for fathers day

To be honest, I was super skeptical when a friend recently explained this whole Macy’s e-gifting thing to me, because I immediately assumed it was some kind of e-gift card.  Especially for your dad, a gift card seems so impersonal, so an e-gift card—a gift card you send via email—seemed to be even worse.  However, I quickly learned that my assumptions were dead wrong, and that e-gifting is totally different.  It actually combines the best of both worlds by offering all the thought and personalization of a specific gift that you’ve selected for your dad, with all the convenience of an electronic gift card.  Maximized thoughtfulness + minimized return/exchange hassle = major wins all around.

fashion blogger online gifting

For my Dad this year, I’ve got my eye on this amazing wine opener (Rich and I got it as a wedding gift and it’s ze bomb dot com) and/or some more of my Dad’s favorite workout gear.  Of course, this e-gifting magic isn’t just limited to Father’s Day; it’s a great option for birthdays, holidays or any gift-giving occasion where you’re either (a) in need of a last minute gift, (b) unsure of the recipient’s color or size preferences, or (c) unsure of the recipient’s best shipping address.  From the recipient’s perspective, so much time (and money!)  is saved when you don’t have to shlep back to the store to return or exchange the gift.  Just think of all the Netflix you could binge on during that time instead.

orange tie neck halter top ivory white pleated culottes

Happy Hump Day!  Sharing the look I sported for Rich’s business school graduation festivities last weekend.  This tie neck halter crop top (only $54!) also has the cutest matching shorts—a winning duo for hot summer days.  As for these culottes which you’ve seen before, I’ve had them for over a year and love wearing them in and out of the office.  Links to several similar pairs below if you’re looking for a similar warm-weather staple.  You also might notice that these block heel ankle strap sandals are the nude version of the black suede pair I’ve been wearing on repeat lately (most recently here and here).  I’ve worn the black ones so much, I decided to spring for the nude ones as well!  They’re super comfy and the perfect heel height so I’m in danger of rationalizing the purchase of additional colors.  I mean this blush?! gray?! berry?!  Too good.
